Ever since learning about AI image generators I decided to dive a little deeper into more articles on the topic. In my article I found that AI helps inspire creativity and imagination without taking it away from us as artists. Matthew Allen's art won first prize at the Colorado State Fair. But the US government has made it so it cannot be copyrighted because it is too much “machine” and not enough “human.” Allen had fought tooth and nail to get his work copyrighted because “The underlying AI-generated work merely constitutes raw material which Mr. Allen has transformed through his artistic contributions,” he used Midjourney to generate a flawless image that won an award yet his contributions into the image was not recognized as an organic contribution but an artificial one. The lack of recognition has caused many issues for Allen as an artist attempting to get his work recognized. Which in turn caused major discourse in the artist community. Wellner wrote an academic journal touching upon Husserl's notion of fantasy stating “My conclusion is that algorithms can be considered creative by human standards, but this entails a new mode of imagination that is co-shaped and co-shared by humans and algorithms.” This is why it is crucial to understand that AI needs to have predominantly human influence or else it will lack creativity and imagination. Overall I found this topic to be incredibly relevant and it made me think about how much change art is going to face in the future.
